Is the US Military at HKIA Airport still evacuating Afghans?Officially, the answer is yes, but the US Government and the military stationed at HKIA have been turning away green card holders, visa holders, and other people eligible for evacuation at the airport gate.

Is there enough time to get our Afghan allies out of Afghanistan?No, not if the Biden administration orders a full withdrawal in 48 hours. Staying another 10-14 days will all the US to evacuate an additional 50,000 - 114,000 Afghans based on current US government evacuation rates of 5,000 - 9,000 people per day.

They say: There wasn’t enough time to evacuate prior to Kabul’s fall. We say:We’ve got the receipts. EOA went live on June 24th. We’ve been pushing for this since February. The Biden administration had more than enough time to plan and execute an evacuation before the situation on the ground reached a crisis-point. On May 6, representatives from several of the United States’ largest refugee groups, including Human Rights First, the International Refugee Assistance Project, No One Left Behind, and the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service logged onto Zoom for a call with National Security Council staff members. The groups pleaded with the White House officials for a mass evacuation of Afghans and urged them not to rely on a backlogged special visa program that could keep Afghans waiting for months or years. There was no time for visas, they said, and Afghans had to be removed quickly to stay alive. The response was cordial but noncommittal, according to one participant, who recalled a sinking feeling afterward that the White House had no plan. This should have started a long time ago.

The U.S. had the time and resources to evacuate our allies and other at-risk groups long before withdrawing U.S. forces. Instead, the Biden administration raced to pull out our troops absent an actionable plan to bring allies and other Afghans to safety. Now, thousands of men, women, and children are in peril.

We say:President Biden could have minimized the pain and suffering of the Afghan people, including the brave men and women who served alongside U.S. forces, if he’d listened to the advocates and Congressional champions who have been raising the alarm for MONTHS that his administration needed an actionable evacuation plan.

Right now there is only one U.S. President - and that’s President Biden. It was President Biden President Biden is the one with the legal authority to evacuate our allies and other at-risk Afghans to safety in the U.S.

Over the last 17 months, this group has grown to over 16,600 members. She is on a mission to save Wartime allies and their families.
Matt Zeller
Advisory Board Co-Chair
Matt Zeller is a US Army veteran. He is also Co-Founder of No One Left Behind, a Truman National Security Project Fellow, and an Adjunct Fellow at the American Security Project. He is the author of Watches Without Time (Just World Books, 2012), which chronicles his experience serving as an embedded combat adviser with the Afghan security forces in Ghazni, Afghanistan, in 2008.
